Training about harmonics and reactive power

Today, we see the term Power Quality increasingly appearing, especially in the electrical industry, with an emphasis on the importance of good power quality. We want to share our knowledge, experience and case studies on this topic during our training ‘Understanding Power Quality; harmonics and reactive power’.

This training is suitable for installers, consultants and employees with some knowledge of electrical engineering or electrical installations.

The causes and risks

The quality of a company also depends on the quality of its electrical installation. In recent years, the application of new technologies in our electricity networks has continuously increased. This has resulted in deteriorated voltage and current quality (Power Quality). At the same time, equipment has become more sensitive to voltage changes. This combination has, among other things, led to an increase in malfunctions, electrical fires and unexplained problems. During the ‘Insight into Power Quality’ training course, we examine all technical aspects of Power Quality.

Harmonic pollution and reactive power

During the training we closely examine harmonic pollution and the risks this entails. Potential risks include overloading your system, cables melting, and sensitive equipment malfunctioning with downtime as a possible result. We explain terms such as: increased zero currents, crest factor, power factor and reactive power. Did you know that Power Factor is not the same as cos phi (reactive power)?

We also inform you about possible solutions for improving Power Quality, such as harmonic filters and capacitors (Cos Phi compensation). After the lunch break, we will continue in the Power Quality Laboratory of Eindhoven University of Technology. Here, we will be utilising the equipment available to visualize the theory presented during the morning session and insightful presentation of some real-life cases..

For groups with a minimum of 10 participants, we can create a customer-specific training. This can be given at your own company location, a different location of your choice or at the Eindhoven University of Technology (subject to availability).
